Top Ten Massage Techniques Explained

There are many types of massage, each with their own benefits to relieve stress, pain or enhance general wellbeing. Massage is an ancient art with many variations depending on the country of origin. I explore some of the most popular, explaining the treatment and their individual benefits.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage, the most popular worldwide, is also known as ‘Classic massage’ and is the foundation for most other types of Western massage. It involves using firm but gentle pressure to promote relaxation, working on areas of specific muscle tension. It is performed on bare skin using oils or lotions. The therapist uses their hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes by increasing the level of oxygen in the blood, it increases the speed body cells can eliminate their waste materials.

The five basic strokes of Swedish massage include:

Effleurage (sliding or gliding)
Petrissage (kneading)
Tapotement (rhythmic tapping)
Friction (cross fiber)
Vibration/shaking

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage, as the name implies, focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Unlike Swedish massage, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage focuses on a specific problem, such as: Chronic pain. It treats the connective tissue of the body rather than just the surface muscles. It is similar to Swedish massage but with slower movements and deeper pressure. Deep tissue massage helps to refresh and relax muscles, increasing the blood flow and therefore the oxygen flow around the body. A deep tissue massage is very slow using long, flowing strokes to ease in and out of the muscle. The aim of deep tissue massage is not to leave you feeling relaxed and blissful; rather, it helps to tackle particular physical, muscular problems to relieve pain and restore normal movement.

Sports Massage

Sports massage was designed for athletes, but is suitable for anyone with chronic pain, injury or range-of-motion problems. It focuses on the prevention and healing of injuries to muscles and tendons. Sports Massage differs from therapeutic massage in that it is a deeper form of soft tissue massage using specific techniques to treat physically active individuals.

The different types of massage include: Post-event – to bring body tissues to normal state. Restorative – during training allows athletes to train harder and minimise chance of injury. Rehabilitative – aimed at alleviating pain due to injury. A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem sustained through sport. It stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids which allows for optimal metabolic exchanges, enhanced recovery after intense training, better performance and decreased onset of muscle soreness as well as reduces the possibility of injury.

Indian Head Massage

Popular in Asia Indian Head Massage has been shown to be good at relieving stress, insomnia, headaches, migraine, tension, and sinusitis. The West has caught on to its benefits using it as a quick de-stressing program.

Indian Head Massage is a very relaxing treatment which, as the name suggests, focuses on massaging the head. Indian Head Massage (Champissage) also includes massage of the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp, face and ears. The treatment uses a range of different movements including deep kneading and compression movements over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas. Performed sitting upright in a chair, it helps to clear the mind as it revitalizes and improves alertness and concentration levels, whilst improving joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders.

Reflexology Massage

Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is based on the concept that there are “reflex” areas on the feet and hands that correspond to specific organs, glands, and other parts of the body. The underlying theory is that if pressure is applied to a specific reflex area, it affects the organ represented.

This seated treatment involves applying pressure to “Zone” areas on the feet and hands with specific thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oil or lotion. Reflexology stimulates internal organs, boosts circulation and can restore bodily functions to normal. Reflexology promotes healing by stimulating the foot, which increases the flow of vital energy to various parts of the body as well as releases endorphins (the body’s natural pain killers)

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage is a full body treatment that uses smooth flat water heated stones placed along both sides of the spine (the chakra centres). The aim is to relax muscles and relieve tension very quickly. Differently weighted stones are used for different amounts of pressure.

Hot stone massage combines the proven benefits of Swedish massage with the deep heat and pressure provided by using warm basalt stones and soothing oils to relax the muscles, allowing for a deeper and more intense all-over massage. The stones are used as tools to deliver effective tissue and muscle massage at light, medium or deep pressure levels in the treatment of sore muscles, back pain, stress and other common ailments. Benefits include the restoration of the body’s natural balance, deep muscle relaxation, improved circulation and the sensation of all over comfort and warmth.

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage is a traditional hands-on therapy originating in Japan used to achieve the harmony of chi in the body. Shiatsu works on the whole being, from the physical to the spiritual.

Shiatsu, also known as acupressure, is a finger pressure massage which involves acupressure techniques (without the needles) using hand, thumbs, elbows and knees incorporating pressure, holding, rubbing, heating or stretching movements which can be deep and firm. Usually performed on a floor mat or futon, Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience which stimulates the body’s own healing systems and brings the body into balance, energetically and physically. Shiatsu massage is best known for relief of stress-related symptoms such as headaches and general muscle tension as well as increasing mental and spiritual awareness.

Neuromuscular Massage

Neuromuscular massage therapy is a deep form of tissue massage for reducing muscle pain through the stimulation of circulation to the nervous system. The theory behind neuromuscular massage is that when a muscle spasms – it is not in the entire muscle, but in a centralized area within the muscle. When blood flow to that area is decreased it may then reverberate to other areas of the muscle, causing pain.

This treatment involves using static pressure focused on a specific area called a trigger point and does not involve massage of the whole body. By applying pressure to the trigger point for several seconds, the lactic acid build-up at the trigger point is dispersed. This relaxes the muscles by increasing the blood flow and oxygen available to them, which releases lactic acid and thus the cause of pain, via the nervous system. Muscle pain and soreness are neutralized by repeated concentrated pressure over the trigger points.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy massage is similar to Swedish massage with several positional adjustments. It is used to ease some of the discomforts associated with pregnancy such as swelling in the legs, muscles and joint aches or reduced flexibility and circulation.

The massage is usually carried out with the mother on her side using special pillows to position her body for the greatest comfort. Also known as pre-natal massage, the treatment helps with relaxation, reduces stress and relieves strained back and leg muscles to correct the posture and reduce back strain. Pregnancy massage aids the circulatory and lymphatic systems, which allows healthy blood flow to the mother and her baby.

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage uses highly concentrated plant oils, known as essential oils, which are added to the massage oil or lotion. This technique combines the natural therapeutic properties of essential oils and the healing power of massage therapy. It can be very effective in relaxing and healing the mind, body and spirit and is often described as a very relaxing and rejuvenating experience. The oils are the most important part of the treatment, chosen for their therapeutic effect, and not just the fragrance to “therapeutically” stimulate the nasal/olfactory senses. These are administered as incense, oil diffusers, or scented oils applied directly to the body, depending on the need.

What Do I Have to Do to Get a Good Massage?

If you want to make sure you get a good massage and not waste your time and money, the key is to ask the right questions.

A few questions can make the difference between bitter disappointment and massage heaven.

If you have any goals for the treatment, make them known. Make sure that your massage therapist can accommodate your goals. If for instance, you like a firmer massage and you make an appointment with somebody who’s typical massage is a light Swedish, you could be setting yourself up for disappointment.

The better a massage therapist gets at a modality, the more they will pull it out of their bag of tricks. If a therapist is good at therapeutic techniques and deep tissue, they’ll usually tell you their massages are deeper or firmer. Somebody who typically does lighter work will tell you their massage is geared more toward relaxation, or they may say that they do more of a Swedish massage which is described as long, relaxing (and generally lighter) strokes.

A good tip is to talk to your therapist about their massage. You may ask them~
How would you describe your typical massage? Is it a firmer touch or a lighter massage?

You may think that asking somebody how long they’ve been doing massage therapy is a good measure of talent, and it can be, but not always. I’ve had lots of massages from long practicing massage therapists who’s massage lacked talent and/or effort. People get burned out with all kinds of jobs. Massage therapists aren’t any different. The rub is, you don’t want to end up on their table if you can help it.

A massage therapist once told me that she refused to lift any limbs anymore. She said it’s too much effort. This was from a woman who had been doing massage therapy for over 10 years. Seriously? Who wants to pay somebody good money if they can’t even be bothered to lift your arm?

Clearly, talent is not just about how long a massage therapist has been practicing, it’s much more about wanting to do your best and loving what you do. I’ve had really good massages from new graduates with great attitudes.

Talk to your massage therapist about how long they’ve been doing massage therapy, if they still enjoy it, and why. See if you can sense some joy and enthusiasm when they speak about their work.

A good massage therapist will make it their business to not only give good massages, but to get good massages.

At first, you may be wondering what this has to do with them giving you a good massage, but it has plenty to do with it. If your massage therapist is making it their business to find out who else is really good then going out there and finding out why, chances are you’ve found a good massage therapist.

Talented massage therapists learn how to give a really good massages from getting really good massages. Lots of them.

Ask your massage therapist if they get regular massages.

If you’re going to a resort, hotel or massage clinic, you may not be able to talk to your therapist directly when you make the appointment. This is too bad, but can’t be helped. However, most times the person setting appointments will be required to know the different modalities the therapist is qualified in so that they know what appointments they can schedule.

A talented therapist will make it a priority to regularly continue their education and learn new modalities. If the therapist knows a lot of modalities, you can probably assume they believe your experience is important enough to spend time and money gaining skills and talent to make your experience better.

When booking an appointment through a scheduler, ask them if they can tell you what modalities your therapist offers or is educated in.

The Higher End Resort Spas have many highly trained therapists. Ordinarily, they have strict minimum requirements for therapists, usually beginning with several years experience and certification in several different modalities. High end Resorts very often encourage their therapists to improve their skills by paying for continuing education and regularly bringing in trainers to teach employees signature and specialty treatments. This makes your chances of getting a better trained massage therapist better than going to the local massage clinic where this kind of training is the exception.

Treating yourself to a massage at a higher end Resort Spa can really be a wonderful experience~ it’s all about being pampered. The facilities are usually nothing short of amazing, and in addition to being able to choose from several different kinds of massages, you can get waxed and scrubbed and wrapped and soaked get just about everything else you can dream of. Everybody should treat themselves to an experience of a Five Star Spa. Splurge.

If you visit one of these Spas, I suggest you plan on spending the day. Complementary with your treatment you will find many luxurious activities and amenities~ the steam, the soak, the yoga class, meditation class, the organic snacks and herbal tea, the pool…you just sort of float around all day in your robe like you’re in heaven. The only thing you might need is a good book to enjoy by the pool. I suggest you take advantage of it all, because you’ll pay for it.

To give you some idea of the typical price for a treatment at a high end Spa, for example, at The Boulders Resort and Spa in Carefree, Arizona, the price tag for their 50 minute signature massage treatment is $140 plus a 20% service charge. That’s $168 for one 50 minute massage, with includes the gratuity and the use of the facilities. And that’s the least expensive of all the massages they offer.

If you’re paying that much, you want it to be GREAT, right? Right. Ask some questions about your therapist. Tell them what your goals are. If there’s a question about the massage therapist that they don’t know the answer to, ask if they can find out and call you back. Or ask if the massage therapist can call you back.

Another way to find a great massage therapist is to find somebody who’s been in private practice or in business for themselves. If an independent massage therapist has built a clientele and has a private practice, chances are there’s a good reason. A good massage brings return clients. Usually you can find a really good therapist in business for themselves for less than half of what you pay at a resort.

There are many of benefits from getting a good massage. The physical benefits include decreased pain, greater flexibility, improved immune function, faster healing, increase in endorphins, decreased depression and anxiety and lowered blood pressure from blissful relaxation…

And nothing feels as heavenly or can make you as happy as a really good massage…

Asking the right questions can mean the difference between a frustrating waste of time and a really wonderful experience.

Understanding Medicare

What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a national, tax-supported health insurance program for people 65 and over and some persons with disabilities. If you or your spouse have worked full time for 10 or more years over a lifetime, you are probably eligible to receive Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) for free. Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) is available at a monthly rate set annually by Congress ($121.80 in 2016 for incomes $85000.00 or less for an individual). Some seniors are eligible to receive the medical insurance portion (Part B) free as well, depending on their income and asset levels. For more information, inquire about the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB), Special Low Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB), and Qualifying Individual programs through your county social services office.

How Does Medicare Work?

Medicare is actually two separate types of insurance–hospital and medical. It is not intended to cover all your medical expenses. Hospital insurance (Part A of Medicare) covers medical treatment and surgical procedures performed in a hospital. It also covers hospice, home health, and limited skilled nursing care. Medical insurance (Part B of Medicare) covers part of the cost of doctor bills, outpatient care, medical equipment, and lab and diagnostic tests. With the Medicare modernization act of 2003, Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Medicare Part D (Prescription Coverage), also became available, through private insurance companies.

How Do I Get Medicare?

If you are receiving Social Security benefits prior to turning 65, you should automatically receive notification of your enrollment in Medicare shortly before your 65th birthday. Other individuals must apply by calling or visiting their Social Security office to receive Medicare. If you are not yet receiving Social Security or if you have not received a Medicare enrollment notice, you should contact the nearest Social Security office for information. Applications for Medicare can be made during a seven-month period beginning three months prior to the month of your 65th birthday. IT IS BEST TO APPLY DURING THE THREE MONTHS PRIOR TO THE MONTH OF YOUR 65TH BIRTHDAY. If an application is made during that time, coverage will begin on the first day of your birth month. Applying later will delay the start of your benefits. You can also apply for Medicare from January 1 through March 31 every year after your 65th birthday. Your coverage then starts July 1 of the year you signed up and you will pay a 10 percent surcharge on the Part B premium for each 12 months you were eligible but not enrolled.

What If I Am Still Working? If you continue to work after age 65 or your spouse is working and you are covered by an employer group health plan (EGHP), you may want to delay enrollment in Part B of Medicare. Enrolling in Medicare Part B will trigger your open enrollment for Medicare supplement insurance at a time when you do not need supplemental coverage. The penalty for late enrollment in Part B does not apply if you are covered by an EGHP because of your or your spouse’s current employment. If you do work after age 65, you may apply for Medicare Part B at any time prior to retirement, but you must apply no later than eight months after your formal retirement in order to avoid paying a premium penalty. Even if your employer offers a retirement health plan, you will want to sign up for Medicare Part A and probably for Medicare Part B when you retire. Most retirement plans assume you are covered under Medicare and will not pay for services that Medicare would have covered. Veterans may be eligible for special medical programs. However, eligibility and benefits are very restrictive and are subject to change. The Department of Veterans Affairs advises veterans to apply for both Parts A and B of Medicare to ensure adequate medical coverage.

What About Costs Medicare Does Not Cover? Medicare pays for only a portion of hospital and medical bills. As with many private insurance plans, the government expects beneficiaries to pay a share of their bills. Medicare Parts A and B both have deductible and coinsurance requirements. The deductibles for 2016 are $1288.00 per Benefit Period, for Part A. The Part B deductible is $166.00 per year. Private insurance is available to cover all or some of these out-of-pocket costs. These insurance plans are called Medicare supplements (also called Med Sup or Medigap plans).

Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Supplements are standardized by the Federal Government. They are lettered A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M & N. Each standardized Medigap policy must offer the same basic benefits no matter which insurance company sells it. Cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies with the same letter sold by different insurance companies. Plan A pays the Medicare hospital and physician coinsurance, the first three pints of blood, and 365 days of hospitalization beyond Medicare. Plans B through N provide these benefits and add further benefits such as coverage for Medicare deductibles, excess charges and limited preventive care, and foreign travel. ONLY ONE MED SUP PLAN IS NECESSARY. You should only buy one Med Sup plan. No one should try to sell you an additional Med Sup plan unless you decide you need to switch policies.

Open Enrollment in Medicare Supplement Insurance At age 65, all consumers – including those already receiving Medicare due to disability – have a six-month “open enrollment” period. For six months beginning when you are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B, companies must sell you any Medicare supplement plan they offer. After this limited open enrollment period, companies can pick and choose whom they will cover. Other Options If you have an individual or “bank group” insurance policy, becoming Medicare eligible does not require you to cancel it and purchase a Medicare supplement. Doing so may save premium costs but it is important to compare benefits before deciding what will work best. If you are eligible for employer retirement insurance, review the plan carefully to understand what benefits are available and how it works with Medicare. Be aware that employer plans are not standardized and are not subject to the requirements governing standardized Medicare supplement policies. Some Texas residents are eligible to enroll in approved Medicare Advantage plans. These plans are offered by private insurance companies. Each year Medicare Advantage companies decide where they will offer their plans, what benefits will be offered, and what the premiums will be. There are several Medicare Advantage plans available in several counties in East Texas. Depending on plan choice, a member may be responsible for paying co-payments for certain covered services.

Should I Purchase Long-Term Care Insurance?

In the past, families often stepped in to help when older family members were no longer able to care for themselves. Today, with older people living longer, families often living long distances apart and more women working outside the home, fewer families are able to provide this care. A wide range of long-term care services is now available–day care, respite care, home care, and nursing care. These services are expensive and often exceed a person’s ability to pay. People often mistakenly assume that Medicare will cover their long-term care costs. MEDICARE ONLY COVERS LONG-TERM CARE UNDER VERY, VERY LIMITED CIRCUMSTANCES.

Because these are standardized plans, it is easy to compare one company to another. The difference between plan N from one company to the next is price and the perceived level of customer service.

Other than the small co-pays for doctors visits and ER visits, you will have very little out-of-pocket expense. No deductibles or daily co-pays for inpatient hospital stays are required. You may have less out-of-pocket expenses for some outpatient procedures. Many Advantage plans require the same coinsurance levels as original Medicare for outpatient surgery and other medical services. Your plan N supplement will cover the 20% coinsurance for outpatient surgery that Medicare doesn’t pay. Unlike an Advantage plan, plan N is not an annual plan and you are not subject to enrollment periods. Many providers are offering plan N with limited underwriting and pre-existing conditions are not relevant in many cases. If your Medicare Advantage plan is not being renewed you are guaranteed acceptance into a Medicare supplement plan.

What are you missing?

Supplements fill in the gaps left by Medicare. You are generally not afforded additional benefits, like dental, vision or gym memberships. So you need to determine the importance of these ancillary services compared to the freedom and level of coverage offered by the supplement. Medicare supplements do not include Part D drug coverage. You will need to purchase a separate drug plan and will still be subject to Part D enrollment periods. Whether or not the plan will fit your budget is obviously a huge factor. But that said, there are Advantage plans with higher premiums than plan N.

One benefit of a standardized plan, is that it lends itself to being easy to shop for online. Unlike an Advantage plan, you don’t need to review dozens of brochures to learn about the differences from one plan to the next. The benefits are the same with Medicare supplement plan N no matter which company you are looking at and you should be able to compare plans online with little trouble.

Preparing for a Massage Interview – What Every Massage Therapist Should Know and Ask

Before you can start working as a massage therapist, you have to perform a massage interview to get the job, and interviewing for a massage position is quite different than most other interview processes. For many massage therapists, the first job they hold directly out of massage school is for a chiropractor, or a spa / salon owner instead of working as an independent contractor, and it’s important to know what to ask in order to accept the right position. Understanding if you will work as an employee or an independent contractor – especially when a massage therapist is beginning his or her practice – is helpful when deciding where to work.

Why You Need a Resume and Cover Letter When Interviewing for a Massage Position

While you will not be sitting at a desk or crunching numbers, you do need to prepare a resume and cover letter for your anticipated massage interview. Even though it is a non-traditional environment, your employer will want to see that you are a professional massage therapist who can represent himself or herself adequately, and a well-written cover letter can show that you have good communication skills – an invaluable asset when working with a diverse set of clients. Be sure to include information about your school, your modalities, and your intended certifications – the more a potential employer knows about you and your specific interests, the more you will stand apart from the rest of the crowd and the higher the likelihood that you will soon be interviewing for the massage position.

Coming in for a Massage Interview

When you receive a call to come in for an interview, prepare to actually give a massage. This might surprise some applicants, but you are interviewing for a massage position, and your employer wants to know what you can do and what your style is like. Because you want to be comfortable while giving the massage, be sure to wear an appropriate outfit for both a massage and an in-person interview. Often, clean, long black yoga pants and a collared shirt will do just fine. Unlike most interviews where applicants are expected to wear slacks and a button-down shirt, your potential employer will expect a massage therapist to be dressed for the test massage. Just to be sure, when you schedule the massage interview, ask over the phone what would be appropriate attire. Additionally, it is always a good idea to arrive at the massage interview fully prepared – a massage therapist should bring supplies to the interview such as sheets, and lotion or oil. While the interviewer will likely have these supplies on hand, it is always a good idea to be in control of the session by being fully prepared.

When interviewing for a massage position, depending on the size of the business, a human resources person or the owner will likely be the first person to sit down with you for a few moments and talk with you about your education and experience. During the massage interview, be prepared to talk about what you learned in school, what your strongest and weakest modalities are, what you envision for yourself as a massage therapist, and about your previous experience with clients. Then you will give a test massage, either an abbreviated (30 minutes or less) or standard (one hour) massage, showing your abilities to give Swedish and deep tissue massage. Interviewing for a massage position sometimes, but not often, involves you being asked to display competence in additional modalities that you have listed on your resume such as hot stone therapy, or sports massage.

It is important to be yourself during the massage interview. Just relax and give the same massage that you would give to a client. Do not be nervous, because it will come through in your touch. Your employer is looking to see your skill as a massage therapist, and the more natural and relaxed you are the better interviewing for the massage position will go.

Getting the Job and Working

If the massage interview goes well and you get the job, you will likely begin either as a full-time or part-time massage therapist. Be sure to speak with your employer up front about the method of compensation and your designation as either an employee or an independent contractor, because these are very different and can make a big impact on your revenue and tax filing at the end of the year. This is a very important question to ask when interviewing for the massage position as employees are expected to work during a set number of hours, can only work for one employer at a time, and must comply with the employer’s standards of service and instructions about how to deliver massage therapy. From a financial standpoint, make sure that you understand during the massage interview if you will be an employee, as employers pay the majority of the employee’s taxes, and the massage therapist is often eligible for benefits such as health insurance and paid vacation time.

Unlike employees, independent contractors are typically able to set their own hours, and are paid a percentage of the total revenue they bring into a business. They tend to have more flexibility about the type of massage protocol delivered and the types of services offered. If this is the type of work environment you have envisioned, you should establish this when interviewing for the massage position. For example, a massage therapist who is an employee at a large spa will be expected to adhere to the standard services as listed on a published menu of services but a contractor should legally have more flexibility. During the massage interview, ask if customers expect to receive a comparable massage regardless of which therapist they see, and if therapists are expected to closely maintain a massage protocol. If a massage therapist works as an independent contractor in a smaller spa or for a chiropractor, he or she is more likely to be able to decide upon which services to offer, the rate of the services, and the hours during which those services will be available. Another reason to clarify your status as an employee or contractor when interviewing for the massage position is because independent contractors are responsible for their own client records, and have control over those client records when and if they decide to leave their place of business. It’s important to understand this early on in the massage interview, because with this independence comes the expectation of independent costs – contractors do not have taxes paid for by their employers, and often pay a large amount of money out-of-pocket at the end of the year.

Longevity as a Massage Therapist (Employee or Contractor)

It is important to understand all of the different elements that go into interviewing for a massage position, and know which questions to ask before you get hired. In addition to being prepared to give a hands-on trial massage, you should also determine during the massage interview what your potential employer expects from you in terms of compensation, hours, employee status, massage type, and career ambitions. That way you can be sure to begin a long-term, profitable, and enjoyable job as a massage therapist, either as an employee or an independent contractor.

3 Comforting Benefits Of Portable Home EKG Machines

If you are experiencing frequent ectopic beats, or small variations of an otherwise normal heart beat, or if you occasionally experience heart palpitations, which are uncomfortable feelings associated with abnormally fast and forceful heart beats, you may be a good candidate to look into getting a portable home EKG machine.

You may have seen a doctor or a cardiologist, and they may have taken an ECG, but, due to the irregularity of the episodes, they may have a hard time finding anything in the ECG they could take in the office. Or, maybe the conditions in the doctors office are just so different that you simply do not experience anything unusual there, but when you come home, the ectopic beats or palpitations appear again.

We will describe three advantages of using a simple personal ECG monitor at home instead of in a doctors office or hospital. They are: measuring the heart beat during your normal daily activities, doing it from the comfort of your home, and cost.

Measuring the heart beat abnormalities during normal activities

It is important to do the heart beat measurements during your regular work day. Modern home EKG devices are so small that you can easily wear them under the clothes. Some of them are even wireless, so you can connect the electrodes to the monitor wirelessly, causing even less distraction. As your heart rhythms are being measured, you go on doing your regular activities, except for bathing and showering. You take good notes of everything you do.

Being in your regular environment will help you “catch” the moments when palpitations occur all of a sudden, or when you experience any ectopic beats at all.

Staying at home and monitoring ECG

Many people much prefer staying at home instead of in a hospital if at all possible. They simply prefer to stay with people they know instead with strangers, no matter how friendly the hospital staff. So wearing the ECG electrodes and being helped by family is much preferred. Modern technologies such as wireless ECG, or miniature home ECG monitor, and even internet transfer of data to the hospital make home EKG measurements easy and productive.

For instance, 24 hour monitoring, even during sleep, are quite possible when no wires are worn to connect to the main EKG device.

Cost of hospital stay

Last but not least, hospital stay is very expensive in the USA today. Many folks lack complete insurance, so even a deductible, or coinsurance of 20%-40% can be a big hit on the wallet, even for a single night spent at the hospital. The cost of a home EKG machine, or a small pocket ECG, is quite small and will pay for itself after just a single day of use at home. When you learn how to turn the handheld ECG machine on, place the EKG calipers and ECG leads, and learn the basics of ECG interpretation, you will be in good shape.

Do You Ever Feel Like Crying? Self-Compassion and Planetary Healing

Last week I had a strange phone encounter.

I was talking to a customer service representative for a company I shan’t name, due to a saga I somehow manifested involving long waits, being ported from person to person to person (none of whom was empowered to do anything about my situation) and weeks-nay, months now-without resolution.

Finally in a conversation with this one particular customer service representative I heard myself saying, “I just feel like crying right now, I am so angry!” And then, I did start crying.

It was embarrassed, because my ego really likes its persona of being in control. I pride myself on handling conflict with aplomb.

And really, while the situation was frustrating, and perhaps even worthy of a good cry, I realized, when I had some time to reflect, that I wasn’t crying over this situation.

Instead, I had to ask myself: when else have I felt out of control, disempowered and helpless?

Oooooh, OK. Now I was getting somewhere.

I recognized unprocessed emotions from something that was really important in my life (a recent decision involving one of our children). And that brought up older unprocessed emotion involving other situations in my life when I felt out of control, disempowered and helpless.

When I was able to name those feelings and hold a compassionate place for them to just be what they were, they began to dissipate.

And now, when I think about the situation that brought me to tears last week (still unresolved, by the way), I can smile and offer thanks for the healing it is bringing into my life.

Sometimes, you just have to lie down and cry.

A few months ago, I wrote this poem about making space for the difficult feelings inside of myself.

Terrible Beauty

A sky like that

ought to be enough

even for the most intransigent

heart.

Just look at it:

light-laden coral clouds

cascading across a cornflower

canvas, coaxing me to thaw

my frozen feelings

in the face of their phenomenal

fire.

And yet, I stand unmoved.

What use have I

for heartbreaking beauty?

I’m holding a heart already

a hundred times broken.

So surround me with sunsets,

beleaguer me with beauty.

Tonight the only tender

thing that I can do

is make space for one

who cannot even weep for

wonder.

Tomorrow

will be time enough

for dénouements and

healing tears.

Tonight, let the beauty be

that while the fading light

leaves me feeling lost

and lonely,

I can sit

heart to heart

with my own longing

and have no need to make it

other than it is.

Ó2010, Kimberly V. Schneider

The most healing thing you can do when faced with challenging emotions is to stop. Notice how you’re feeling. Breathe. Find your center. Connect with your Essential Self. Know that help is yours. Let love fill you. Be peace.

When you remember who you are, you don’t need to change anything outside your self. Everything you need is right here.

And here’s the really beautiful part: when you let yourself feel your feelings, when you create a compassionate poem inside yourself for all of who you are, you no longer need to dump your dense energy into the Collective Unconscious, where it might result in someone uttering an angry word, or hitting a child, or picking up a gun, or dropping a bomb.

Never underestimate the power of a little self-compassion.

What Is The Best Shiatsu Massage Chair?

If you really want the best shiatsu massage chair you’re going to have to spend upwards of $1,800 and you’ll be looking at buying Japanese. If you don’t where to start looking, here are some recommendations of the very best models on offer.

But why Japanese? The answer is simple. The Japanese market is the most competitive and the Japanese take massage chairs very seriously; 22% of the population is reported as owning one. In order to even survive in this market place manufacturers have to offer their customers the best quality with the best technical features at a competitive price. As a result, Japanese massage chairs are simply the world’s best.

Another thing you should know is that there’s no such thing as a cheap shiatsu massage chair. Shiatsu is applying pressure using fingers, thumbs and palms on energetic pathways, called meridians. The applied pressure has to be precise or you aren’t getting the correct massage. You can’t expect to lie back in a conventional chair and get a shiatsu massage. The chair has to be intelligent enough to be able to detect your body shape and to adjust the rollers automatically to align correctly along your neck and spine. Some manufacturers claim you can manually move the rollers to your desired position. This is true, but are you a massage expert? Would you really know where to place the rollers?

A good quality shiatsu massage chair is the Fujikura, which retails for around $1,800. It comes with an intelligent roller system that moves the rollers to conform to the shape of your back. It isn’t the best technology on offer (read about optical sensors below) but it’s okay and the Fujikura chair gives a pretty good massage. What’s really nice about this chair is the foot and calf massager (20 air bags are incorporated in it) and it also has arm massagers. As an added bonus it comes with a music system so you can listen to your music as you lie back and enjoy the massage.

But if you really want the best in technology – and therefore the best shiatsu massager – you should take a look at two manufacturers that use optical sensors. Both OSIM and Inada use infrared scanning before each massage to determine your exact body shape. The system glides along your spine, taking note of your exact measurements to pinpoint your acupressure points and then automatically adjusts the chair to fit you perfectly.

The Inada i.2 Massage Chair (HCP-i.2A) retails for around $3,300. It’s a very stylish looking chair and comes complete with a top quality foot massager. There’s no arm massager; you’d have to upgrade to the OSIM iDesire Massage Chair costing around $4,500 to get this feature plus lots more. What you do get are 8 Health care programs, a Reflexology Map that uses extrusions to press on vital reflex points on your soles, and air bags that are strategically placed to exert firm lateral pressure at the outer buttocks and upper thigh muscles.

The OSIM iSymphonic Massage Chair retails for around $3,500 and really is a technically advance piece of furniture. Like the Inada massage chair, it uses optical sensors to make the chair exactly fit your body. But, it also has a music therapy system that is incredible. Basically, the music determines what type of massage you get. If you play trance or techno, you’re going to get a pounding, but if you play quiet, melodious music, the chair will automatically give you a softer, gentler massage. The company has just recently upgraded the chair to make it audio/visual, so you can now watch something of your choosing while being massaged.

If you really want a genuine shiatsu massage chair then buy a Japanese massage chair and be prepared to spend around $2,000 upwards. But the best advice is to go out and actually try out these chairs so you can be sure you get one that is just right for you.
